About Me

My photo
On June 1, 2011 I embarked on a 27 month journey with the Peace Corps to Sierra Leone where I taught Math. Starting this fall of 2014 my wife and I are moving to Casablanca, Morocco to teach again!..this is the journal of one rambling man in Africa.

Everything is in its right place....

Sooooo I guess I could write a more personal blog now and less description of Salone....

Lets see. Two Fridays ago I swore into the Peace Corps with 48 others and the following monday left for my site, Blama, where I will be teaching and living for the next 24 months. I love it here. My house is super nice and peaceful and my backdoor opens up to the bush ("jungle"). I can sit outside my backdoor and eat my cereal and watch horn-bills fly around. Incredible. I got a kitten for pest control and companionship. Its name is Sprout. My closed off courtyard has sprouted the tomatoes I planted upon arrival. Every friday there is a market where people come from other towns and bring buckets, pots, radios and other various small electronics, and various food items that are in season. I bought some stuff for my house at the one last friday. Its coming together nicely. I am having a cushy chair and coffee table built for my reading room and a cabinet for my dining room. Its cool having a carpenter and a tailor and having whatever I want hand made for me. Kenema is about a 15 minute ride away and a 8000 Leone round trip (about two bucks) and is where I can get on the internet and buy bigger items. I have cooked once so far on my coal pot ( essentially a ceramic pit where you cook over coals surrounded by metal) and it turned out ok. Will try again tonight for pasta. I really like my supervisor and his family next door. They will be cooking meals for me when I dont otherwise cook for myself. I am slowly getting used to the food. Still thoroughly enjoy the little things like a fresh grapefruit or a imported candybar from asia or europe. The last three months have been training from 8-5 everyday, and including lots of language training, cultural training, various teaching training, a three week summer school program where I taught math for two periods a day, and other small classes about safety, security, and health. Our group of 48 is pretty awesome and we all get along pretty well. There are several that Ive gotten pretty close to and one in particular Ive gotten REALLY close to :) She's pretty great. Running out of time here so ill wrap it up with....I love africa, I love salone, I love my life. Its amazing here and Ive never been happier. I feel like I am finally where Ive always meant to be. Anyone that can save the money and make it out here DEFIANTLY should come visit. You will be blown away. This country is beautiful and full of beautiful people. I always have a smile....unless i have diarrhea.
